Arrive on Time at Hardy!
Every minute counts in school! At Hardy, students enter the classroom at 8:30 a.m. and the day begins. When children arrive on time, they begin their day with a positive outlook! Students have responsibilities early in the day:
If your child arrives late to school, it has a negative impact. Morning lessons begin shortly after arrival. When a child comes into school late, the classroom teacher needs to stop teaching, add the child to the attendance list, make sure that he/she has ordered lunch and communicate with the office. This takes away learning time from the whole class.
The School Council has established the following guidelines to support a successful arrival and set a positive tone for the day:
The entire Hardy staff thanks you in advance for making sure every student learns responsible behavior by arriving to school on time.
Arrival and departure by bus
Students who use the bus will receive information indicating local pick-up and drop-off locations and times. For safety reasons, students who are not registered as bus riders may NOT ride the bus to a friend’s house after school.
Arrival and departure by bicycle
Children in grades 3-5, with parent permission, may ride their bicycles to school. Children younger than grade 3 may ride their bikes to school when accompanied by an adult, as recommended by the Wellesley Police. Riders must wear helmets, in compliance with Massachusetts General Law c.85, s.11(b): “Any person twelve years of age or younger operating a bicycle or being carried as a passenger on a bicycle on a public way, bicycle path or on any other public right-of-way shall wear a helmet.”
Bicycles should be registered with the Wellesley Police Department. Bicycle racks are located behind the school and bicycles should be locked. For safety reasons, bicycles should be walked on school property.
Arrival and departure by foot
Parents should instruct children who walk to school on pedestrian safety rules. Children should only cross the street at designated crosswalks and with crossing guards whenever possible. They should never cross the street from between parked cars and should be reminded to exercise extra caution during the winter months. Children should not enter the playground through the parking lot.
Crossing Guards
Crossing guards are on duty in the following locations from 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. every day and 3:00 - 3:30 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when they are on duty from 12:00 p.m. - 12:35 p.m.
Arrival and departure by car
The following rules and regulations were developed for the sole purpose of ensuring the safety of children. Your cooperation is essential.
Cars are not allowed to drop off or pick up in the driveway in front of the school where the bus drops off and picks up. The only exception to that is if you are late dropping your child off in which case you must park in the loop and walk your child into the school office to sign them in as tardy.
Morning Drop-off
You may drop off your child between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. in the horseshoe drive on Hardy Road. During morning arrival, it is recommended that parents consider the horseshoe area as the “live” drop off area where parents remain in their vehicles and children disembark independently. Placing car seats on the passenger side of your vehicle allows young children to disembark away from the line of traffic. Please teach your child how to unbuckle his/her seat belt.
If you think your child could use some support getting to the playground at the start of the school year to get from the car drop off to the blacktop, we will have a staff person available to escort them. For our younger students, new to the routines, they might feel more comfortable having a familiar staff person show them the way. Once students are comfortable and feel independent then they can go directly to the playground from their car.
Dismissal Guidelines
Students in Kindergarten through grade two will be dismissed directly to an adult. Dismissal forms will be sent via email with the principal’s letter and should be completed and returned to the classroom teachers. They are also on the Hardy website. You must send in a note if your child will be dismissed to anyone you have not proactively approved. Please have that person prepared to show a photo ID if the teacher does not know them directly.
Students in grades four and five may pick up siblings in grades two and three if that is the parents’ wish and we receive notification.
Afternoon Pick-up
You may pick up your child in the horseshoe drive on Hardy Road beginning at 3:05 p.m. During afternoon dismissal, we ask that parents refrain from parking anywhere on Hardy Road (as directed on the NO PARKING signs). Identification cards are available to place on your dashboard. Follow the line of traffic down Hardy Road, around the circle and along the building. When you reach the sidewalk area parallel to the building, your child may load into your vehicle. Thank you for working with younger children to become familiar with the look of the car that will be picking them up.
Please do NOT leave or park your car in the faculty parking lot during arrival (8:15-8:45) or dismissal (2:45-3:15) times. Please do not use the faculty lot as a drop-off or pick-up area.
If you would like to meet your child on the grassy area outside the gym and escort him/her to your car, you may wish to park on Lafayette Circle (across Weston Road) or on Hickory or Lawrence Roads (abutting the playground). If you park on one of these streets, be courteous of the residents: park on one side of the street only and be careful not to drive on the grass. Do not turn in private driveways. Please use the crossing guard when crossing Weston Road.

- Write a note and ask your child to hand it to the classroom teacher.
- If your plans change after student arrival, you must call the school secretary to update us with your dismissal change before 2:30 pm. Emailing or leaving a voice message to the teacher or school secretary does not guarantee that the change in dismissal plan will be heard by the school staff. Please make sure to receive confirmation regarding the change from Hardy staff by the school secretary.
In Case You Are Late
